Moller takes over as interim head football coach
Interim head football coach Tony Moller.
Elk Rapids football gained its second varsity football head coach in a month’s time as assistant coach Tony Moller agreed to take over the top spot on an interim basis after newly hired head coach Jake Messner stepped down last week due to health reasons. Messner had resigned as the high school special education teacher earlier this month because of health issues but hoped to be able to continue as the varsity football coach. As it became clear that he needed to focus on taking care of his health, Messner stepped aside and Moller stepped up.
“I love coaching these kids and taking over for Jake as interim was just the thing to do. The program needs to get organized and going, and I didn’t want to have a new coach come in that could change the system so close to the official start of practice,” Moller said.
“We have a good group of kids coming back; we have a chance to really do something this year.” Moller has been the Elk defensive coordinator for the last two seasons but has been involved in most every aspect of coaching in the football program since being hired by former Elk football coach Ed Schindler in 2006. Moller started his coaching career in Elk Rapids in the baseball program back in 1996, both at the JV level and then assisting varsity under former baseball coaches Patrick Potter and Al Vasquez.
“I have lived in this area for 24 years and have coached Elk Rapids sports for 19 of them,” Moller said.
Moeller will continue as the defensive coordinator and plans to keep the offense installed by Keith Schulte two years ago. “Keith installed a great offense and our guys are used to it. It is very tough to defend. Most all of the coaching staff is back, so we should be pretty decent. I have had a lot of support since taking the interim title,” Moller said.
The Elks officially begin practice on Monday, August 12. We wish Coach Messner a complete recovery and look forward to his return to the sidelines as soon as he is able. Go Elks!
